Defeating Darwinism by Opening Minds, IVP, Philip Johnson
We have a fine catalogue of books dealing with the misleading assumptions and affirmations by the Darwinists. This is an issue that can be studied in considerable depth. If you want a single book that sums up the issue concisely and clearly- this is the book. We recommend all of Philip Johnson’s books and many others- but you will find a clear and understandable argument regarding the errors of Darwinism in this book.
WILLIAM EWART GLADSTONE, David W. Bebbington, Eerdmans Publishing Co.
This is a terrific life story about an aristocratic man in Great Britain in the 1800’s.His participation on Parliament, in the Church, and in the society of his day had profound effects. He is an outstanding example of a Christian applying his Christian beliefs at the highest levels of government. He served in Parliament for more than sixty years and as Prime Minister for four different periods during the reign of Queen Victoria.
From the book:“Gladstone was a highly gifted man with a striking appearance. In his earlier years he was slim, erect, and had tousled black hair.In his old age, observers were most impressed by the majestic forehead and the piercing eye that made opponents quail. His mind was sharp, his memory excellent, and from an early age he was trained in precise reasoning. He worked formidably hard, applying himself to paperwork for long hours at a time.As Prime Minister in the 1880’s, when he had the help of only four secretaries, he composed some twenty thousand letters a year.He was also an effective speaker.”
This is an extraordinary book by a Christian Indian Intellectual. It is a Biography, a History, and an Apologetic. It gives us a very captivating and encouraging account of a living Christianity. First in the author’s life, second in his nation, India, and then in the Western World. He makes a great case for the strength of the Bible, and the healing powers of Christianity for our lives and for our culture. He reminds us that many of our current problems come from a neglect of the Bible.
JESUS ON TRIAL (A Lawyer Affirms the Truth of the Gospel)
David Limbaugh, Regnery
This is an excellent general apologetic by a Christian attorney. He is a nationally syndicated columnist; the author of five New York Times bestsellers: Absolute Power, Persecution, Bankrupt, The Great Destroyer, and the #1 bestseller, Crimes Against Liberty. He approaches the final days of Jesus with the mind of an attorney: what are the facts, does the evidence stand up, are the witnesses to the resurrection reliable? He makes the case for the reliability of the Bible as God’s word. He deals with and refutes criticisms against Jesus and the Bible. He presents a powerful argument for the dependability and reliability of Christianity.

7 MEN: AND THE SECRET OF THEIR GREATNESS by Eric Metaxas
The author has done us a great favor in giving a very fascinating and encouraging account of seven courageous men in short story form. He notes that each of them made hard choices and sacrifices to achieve a greater good. We can admire them, and we can learn from them. In seven chapters he tells us about George Washington, William Wilberforce, Eric Liddell (Chariots of Fire), Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Jackie Robinson, Pope John Paul II, and Charles W. Colson. All were Christians. The experiences of each of these men are remarkable. The chapter on George Washington, alone, is worth the price of the book.
Here’s another recommendation and perspective on the book:
“What is true manhood? And what makes a man in our 21st century? These are vital questions that my friend Eric Metaxas helps us wrestle with in this great new book. In looking back to seven outstanding men of history, Eric helps us understand the essential elements of manhood in any age. This is a superb work- and I highly recommend it”. -The Hon. Gregory W. Slayton, author of the national bestseller, “Be a Better Dad Today”.
The Screwtape LettersC . S. Lewis (Baker Harper/SF)
This book remains one of the best (imaginary) accounts of our personal individual struggles with evil, and of the designs of the enemy upon every person. Part of the genius of Lewis is that he deals with a subject that can be overbearing with a light touch. The Screwtape Letters aid the reader in better understand one’s self in the struggle to love and obey God.
Especially for ages 14 – 18. Primarily in comic book style with some narrative interspersed. Makes the case for Intelligent design in an appealing and fair manner. Features a friendly conversation on evolution between two proffessors (Linda and Dr. Teller). A most significant book for young people.
The Wedge of Truth, Phillip E. Johnson (InterVarsity Press)
The Wedge of Truth, by Professor Johnson, builds on his previous books, especially Darwin on Trial, Defeating Darwinism, and Reason in the Balance. It is not a rehash of previous works. It reviews the case against naturalistic Evolution in a fresh manner. Johnson especially emphasizes the problem of information content. The human, animal, and plant genomes carry enormous information. Natural selection and mutations neither create nor add to that information content. So what is the source of that content if it is not from a transcendent designer? The book deals incisively with the epistemological difficulties of the scientific establishment, who begin with materialistic assumptions and, then, appeal to those assumptions as if they were proof. Dallas Willard states in the Forward, “They cannot afford to be wrong about the godlessness of reality, for now our whole system of education is based on that assumption, just as some while ago it was based on the assumption of God.” Chapter 3 is titled, “The Kansas Controversy” and analyzes the furor that erupted when the School Board of Kansas decided to broaden the discussion on evolution.
This book is for those who want to keep current on the argument from design vs. that of a mindless, purposeless naturalism; for those who are concerned about the epistemological basis of contemporary scientific philosophy; and for those who are concerned about the impact of a rigid materialistic philosophy on children and high school and college students. As usual, Johnson writes in an appealing and clear manner.
Reason in the Balance: The Case Against Naturalism in Science, Law & EducationPhillip E. Johnson (InterVarsity)
Johnson documents how naturalism is the pervasive philosophy of education, law, government, and the media. The result is that the Christian worldview is put at an unfair disadvantage. The remedy is a clear awareness of the problem and a willingness to constructively and courteously articulate the biblical worldview in the public square. ISBN 0-8308-1929-0 Soft Cover, 245 pages
