The
New Testament Documents: Are They Reliable? F. Bruce
(InterVarsity) (Fifth Edition)
A
classic defense of the authenticity of the New Testament canon. Bruce explains
why the twenty-seven books of the New Testament were accorded the status of
scripture alongside the Old Testament books. He ably contends that the early
church included these books in the canon because they were already recognized
as divinely inspired. For many years Bruce was Rylands professor of biblical
criticism and exegesis at the University of Manchester. ISBN 0-8308-2736-6

God
and the Astronomers Second Edition, Robert Jastrow
(W.W.
Norton Co., Inc.)
Dr.
Jastrow is the manager of the Mount Wilson Observatory near Pasadena, California,
which was the world's largest telescope until the establishment of the 200-inch
telescope on Mount Palomar. The strong philosophical premise of most cosmologists
had been for a steady state universe, without beginning or end. Jastrow clearly
and lucidly relates how Edwin Hubble and others proved that the universe had
a beginning about 15 billion years ago. Jastrow (who professes to be an agnostic)
writes, "Now we see how the astronomical evidence leads to a biblical view
of the origin of the world." This account of the immensity of the universe
and the tremendous increase in scientific understanding of the nature of the
universe is a captivating and dramatic story. The book demonstrates the harmony
of Genesis 1:1, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" with
current scientific understanding. Dr. Jastrow's scientific credentials are
impeccable. He also knows how to write for the layman. For those unfamiliar
with current
scientific cosmology - this is the place to begin. (The New
York Times) Robert Jastrow ranks among the top writers of popular astornomy.

How
to Think About God Mortimer J. Adler (Macmillan)
Adler
begins with three categories of Blaise Pascal: 1. Those how know God and love
him, 2. Those who do not know God but seek him, 3. Those who neither know
God nor seek him. He states that this book is written primarily for those
in group 2. They do not believe in God, but they are interested and open to
considering the subject. He states that the book may also be helpful to those
in group 1., who may want to better understand their pagan friends. He further
states that his treatment is purely philosophical. He does not rely on any
scriptures. His approach is by way of natural theology
, relying on reason
alone. He states, "The whole concern of a purely philosophical theology is
with the reasonableness of the belief that God exists." He concludes, "I am
therefore, willing to terminate this inquiry with the statement that I have
reasonable grounds for affirming God's existence." ISBN

The Right Questions
(Truth, Meaning & Public Debate)
Phillip E. Johnson
(InterVarsity)
This recent book written
by Philip Johnson is a series of eight essays dealing with some of the most
important issues of our time: 1. Biology and Liberal Freedom; 2. The Word
of God in Education; 3. The First Catastrophe; 4. My New Post; 5. The Second
Catastrophe; 6. Genesis and Gender; 7. Truth and Liberty; 8. The Ultimate
Question. Johnson deals again with the logical errors in a popularly presented
Darwinian evolution, but he ranges over many subjects vital to us today -
including the purpose of Education and both the desirability of liberty and
how it is obtained. In chapter 8, The Ultimate Question, he affirms that the
Incarnation, God becoming man, the birth of Jesus Christ was the most important
event in human history. In Chapter 3, he reviews the logic of some of his
most critical thinking on the subject of origins and the oppressive societal
restrictions on those who raise objections. Then on July 13, 2001, his life
came crashing down in the form of a stoke which took away from him the part
of life that he valued the most: his ability to think. He shares how he has
come back from that stroke and how it has deepened his relationship with Jesus
Christ. All of Johnson's books are excellent. He is a superb teacher. But
in many ways this is the best! ISBN 0-8308-2294-1

What's So Great About Christianity?, Dinesh D'Souza (Regnery Publishing)
Recent calumnies against Christianity by well known atheists Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, and Christopher Hitchens are vigorously responded to in this book. D'Souza demolishes their attacks by developing the following themes: 1. Christianity is the main foundation of eastern civilization, the root of our most cherished values 2. The latest discoveries of modern science support the Christian claim that there is a divine being who created the universe. 3. The evidence for supernatural design is very strong. 4. Nothing in science makes miracles impossible. 5. It is reasonable to have faith in God. 6. Atheism, not Christianity, is responsible for the mass killings of the last century. 7. Atheism is motivated not by reason, but by a kind of cowardly moral escapism.
