Reason
in the Balance: The Case Against Naturalism in Science, Law & Education Phillip E. Johnson (InterVarsity)
Johnson
documents how naturalism is the pervasive philosophy of education, law, government,
and the media. The result is that the Christian worldview is put at an unfair
disadvantage. The remedy is a clear awareness of the problem and a willingness
to constructively and courteously articulate the biblical worldview in the
public square. ISBN 0-8308-1929-0

Darwin's
Black Box Michael
J. Behe
(The
Free
Press
)
There
have been a number of serious challenges to the popularized theory of evolution,
but Michael Behe, Associate Professor of Biochemistry at Lehigh University,
has raised one of the most formidable. Microbiology is a relatively new field.
Darwin and his successors (until the last two decades) knew nothing of the
inner construction of the molecule. They simply assumed that molecules would
cooperate in the grand scheme of development from non-life to life; from simple
to complex; and from a few organisms to great numbers (hence the black box).
He demonstrates the principle of irreducible complexity of the molecule. Every
molecule is a complex mechanism that will only function holistically. The
idea of an incomplete molecule waiting around for a needed component is an
absurdity. This crucial book is in its 16th printing.

The
Wedge of Truth Phillip E. Johnson (InterVarsity Press)
The
Wedge of Truth,
by Professor
Johnson, builds on his previous books, especially Darwin on Trial,
Defeating Darwinism,
and Reason in the Balance.
It is
not a rehash of previous works. It reviews the case against naturalistic
Evolution in a fresh manner. Johnson especially emphasizes the problem
of information content. The human, animal, and plant genomes carry enormous
information. Natural selection and mutations neither create nor add to
that information content. So what is the source of that content if it
is not from a transcendent designer? The book deals incisively with the
epistemological difficulties of the scientific establishment, who begin
with materialistic assumptions and, then, appeal to those assumptions
as if they were proof. Dallas Willard states in the Forward, "They cannot
afford to be wrong about the godlessness of reality, for now our whole
system of education is based on that assumption, just as some while ago
it was based on the assumption of God." Chapter 3 is titled, "The Kansas
Controversy" and analyzes the furor that erupted when the School Board
of Kansas decided to broaden the discussion on evolution.
This book is for those
who want to keep current on the argument from design vs. that of a mindless,
purposeless naturalism; for those who are concerned about the epistemological
basis of contemporary scientific philosophy; and for those who are concerned
about the impact of a rigid materialistic philosophy on children and high
school and college students. As usual, Johnson writes in an appealing and
clear manner.
