Proper
Confidence Lesslie Newbegin (Eerdmans)
A
most important book for those who would understand the deepest philosophical
cleavages in the world today. How is it that we have two isolated streams of
truth: objective empiricism on the one hand, and relative belief systems on
the other? Newbegin eloquently points out the problems that ensue if it is assumed
that faith is not based on truth. The so-called culture
wars of the last
part of the Twentieth Century are much better understood as a result of reading
this book. Newbegin says of skepticism, "So long as we continue to live - we
continually act on the assumption that certain things are true and others not." ISBN

Foolishness
to the Greeks Lesslie Newbigin (Eerdmans)
Newbigin
points out the Western Culture has exalted personal values and beliefs so that
truth is a collection of truths rather than a cohesive entity. He warns that
the Christian community must not concede the field to a multiplicity of contending
values and truths.
He writes, "Religious
experience occurs in the sanctuary, but its claim to truth has to be tested
in the public world of facts where scientific disciplines operate." This book
gives a sound and lucid guide to restoring the Christian worldview to center
stage. ISBN 0-8028-0176-5

Of
Pandas and People Percival Davis, Dean H. Kenyon, Charles B.
Thaxton (Haughton Publishing Co.)
Of
Pandas and People
is written as a high school
textbook to accompany other texts having to do with origins and evolution. It
masterfully presents the case for intelligent design. The result is not only
a most worthy text; It is an excellent introduction to the factual biological
materials that support intelligent design much more convincingly than they support
fortuitous evolution. Foundational for those who want to be up-to-date on the
continuing debate between blind development on the one hand, and purposeful
design on the other. Dean Kenyon is Professor of Biology at San Francisco State
University. Charles Thaxton is a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemists.
Colorful and helpful illustrations on almost every page. ISBN 0-914513-40-0

Darwin
on Trial
Phillip E. Johnson (InterVarsity)
The author, a professor
at the School of Law at the University of California at Berkeley, applies
the logic of the courtroom to naturalistic evolution and finds it wanting.
Many in the scientific community believe in a comprehensive evolution from
the spontaneous origin of life to the development of all life forms without
any outside initiation or guidance. Johnson clearly shows that the mechanisms
for macroevolution (the derivation of one species from another) have not been
established, and that proof for macroevolution is virtually nonexistent. He
demonstrates the illogic of reasoning from microevolution (changes within
species) to macroevolution. The corollary is that there is no reason to rule
out the involvement of God in the origination and continuing development of
life.
